Improving the Young Patient Experience at Two Japanese Hospitals

We often hear from hospitals how our medical mounting solutions improve clinicians’ workflows by making it easier to safely and securely access electronic medical records and to document at the point of care. What is especially rewarding for us is when those clinicians also report the positive impact a GCX product has on their patients.

Such was the case at two Japanese hospitals that last year introduced GCX custom solutions in their neonatal and pediatric intensive care units (NICUs and PICUs).\

At Nagano Children’s Hospital, the young patients in its PICU sometimes broke down in tears, not so much from pain but from frustration at being unable to view a portable television rolled in on a meal cart because the bedrail blocked their view. When not in use, the cart had to be removed due to cramped quarters. This also placed limits on how often a child could view video-based programs as a distraction or for families to learn more about the healing process.

Then a pediatrics specialist at Nagano Children’s Hospital learned about the GCX over-the-bed Patient Engagement Table and an idea ignited: Why not take the same concept of bringing tablet devices to the bedside to wheel in LCD screens hooked up to a DVD player, so young patients could view programming during or in between mealtime?

As with many of our custom projects, a GCX design team worked to create a variable height over-bed table that could accommodate a small TV monitor and keep all cables secure. Because our products are built specifically for medical communities, these custom Patient Engagement Tables also can withstand both rigorous use and daily cleansings.

“Now that the patients can see the TV screen properly, their family members are also happy that they can laugh and chat with them,” the pediatric specialist, Dr. Norimasa Kurasawa, said. You can read more about the Children’s Hospital story here.

We also responded to a need at Okinawa Chubu Central Hospital, which opened the first NICU on the Japanese island and has since seen rapid patient growth. With more tiny patients to care for, medical staff must quickly and unobtrusively maneuver computers and workstations on wheels from a centralized location to individual patient bedsides. As with the Nagano hospital, space is at a premium so we partnered to produce a VHRC Variable Height Carts with a Slim-Line Base for their monitors and keyboards. These carts make it easy for clinicians to easily document and quickly, safely access electronic medical records. We also attached a keyboard tray and Stor-Locx box to securely store equipment or documents.

These VHRC carts can quickly adapt to a site’s or clinician’s changing needs and, importantly, allow nurses to treat patients without wayward cables getting in the way. As with the Nagano hospital, these GCX carts hold up to harsh cleansers, thereby extending a carts’ life span while reducing the risk of hospital-borne infections in a unit caring for the most fragile of fragile patients.
